If I said the words ‘UK talent’, I’m sure some would imagine poor imitations of US material and home made sounds. Let’s face it, the vision of Rap and R&B in the UK up until very recently has been highly underrated…well the script is changing. Enter Estelle, Kano, Sway, Bashy, the heart of the UK urban scene is beating again… Step forward…Street Politiks (S.P), a movement is added to the list, high in anticipation and belief that a new era of artists are taking UK music to that higher plain. The eclectic, infectious beats of the 2002 MOBO (Music of black origin) unsung winners bring Hip-Hop and R&B to the ‘forefront of the market’ doing all it takes to make their presence known. Street Politiks as the name suggests is a statement in itself, making music from the people for the people.

Introducing Charms, the head of the family and founder of the S.P. brand. Even he could not have foreseen his love for music evolving into the passion from which Street Politiks was birthed “It came to a point when I was like, I can do this, I have something to say, people believe in us and I know SP can develop into the biggest music brand in the country. Honestly! We don’t need a manager or a record label to reassure us of our talent and importance to the scene”. (Charms)

According to Charms their introduction to the UK music scene was resisted. He described their approach as ‘forward thinking’ and so didn’t fit the typical house and garage image that labels wanted at the time. Therefore adopting US models of street promotion such as mixtapes (featuring predominantly US instrumentals) resulted in criticism for not being ‘British enough’, which he said caused a lot of Dj’s, writers and labels to ignore their progress.

Despite this ‘SP’ have managed to release two Albums, nine videos and eight mixtapes all as an independent outfit. They’re most recent success being the release of I’LL RIDE feat UK newcomer Cylena Cymone with production coming from grime pioneer Davinche.

As well as I’LL RIDE receiving radio features and play listings nationwide the video also dominated the MTV base chart for 17 weeks as well as Channel U. In addition to this the ILL RIDE remix feat Estelle and Bashy was also featured on mainstream playlists nationwide.
