DEFCON WORKSHOPS is a project run by a collective of experienced professional musicians and artists. The workshops cater for all age groups, genders and backgrounds.The workshops utilise all of the separate tutors’ skills and experience to cover everything from lyric writing and music production to DJing and drumming, as well as offering careers and business advice to take into the modern world.

KDOT is a professional podcast production company and music artist agency. Company founder Kate Brockhurst won a Gold Sony Award for the Best Internet Programme Award in 2007. Following the win, Kate went on to co-present and co-produce the ‘We Love Ibiza Podcast. The series has had nearly 2.5 million downloads to date.

The team are currently in production with Creative Choices for the Creative and Cultural Skills Council, Defcon Workshops, Kent Youth Service and with artists such as Pyrelli as well as their own Agency Podcast.

Why Podcast?

Podcasting is a perfect medium of expression. Its is an innovative and interactive production method for all ages. Young people are more ‘digitally active’ now than ever before – producing as well as consuming new media. Podcasting provides an opportunity to combine education and social media.

Podcasts provide a great alternative to written methods of work, ensuring that young people of all abilities can use them to enhance thier learning and demonstrate achievements.

How can Podcasting support evidence based learning?

Podcasts can be tailored to meet the criteria of any brief and can demonstrate new methods of learning. Producing podcasts encourages interaction and discussion between inidividuals, and in turn improve confidence. Encouraging teamwork as well as personal development.

Podcasts can benefit young people on the scheme by providing them with an audio portfolio of work.

How can I use podcasting in my next workshop?

Podcasts can be produced as part of your workshop scheme assesment, in which young people are interviewed and reflect on thier exeperiences throughout the course.

The format of podcasting can work across any genre. You could include accapella’s from singers and mc’s, recordings of an outing or event, or as part of a film project, enabling young people to produce a multi-platform portfolio of work.
