Dr Meaker are one of Bristol’s prize assets. Led by producer Clive Meaker, the music from this 6 piece live band has been compared to the likes of Reprazent and Massive Attack and many have been won over by their energetic live performances, tight production, quality of writing and heavy bass lines mixed with equal soul pleasure.
Dr Meaker released their debut album, ‘A Lesson From The Speaker’ in November 2008, a record mixed in the same studios as Portishead’s ‘Dummy’ and released on their own record label, Flightcase. Support has been welcomed from Michael Eavis and BBC Radio 1 dj’s; Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens, Twin B, Ras Kwame, Jon Kennedy, Tom Robinson and Pete Tong as well as a host of support from music press and online blogs.
Energetic live performances at Glastonbury, Bestival, Maida Vale, 6MusicHub and XFM have pushed home a message that Dr Meaker are a great live band. The music and live set act like a calling card with Dr Meaker last year producing a remix for William Orbit for his record Optical Illusions and doing a remix for BBC Radio 1 playlisted ‘The King Blues’.
Over the past two years they have released a Jazznote-meets-DnB track called ‘Double Bass’ and a club heavy track called ‘The Fix’, ft London rapper ‘Pyrelli’ both on their own label. It’d be difficult to place Dr Meaker into any one genre, certainly heavy beats, basslines and soulful melodies is their live calling, but as you journey through their album, a theme evolves that can be best described as Bristol Soul.
Dr Meaker are currently writing new material and getting ready to hit the gig and festival circuit in 2011.
